I think what rewatching Unforgiven, which really does have the same ethics as TLOU2 reminded me of, is that letting Abby get away with what she did was as necessary for Ellie as for Abby. "Deserve's got nothing to do with it."

If you take the tragic view of things and the understanding that *most of the time* we can't choose but to be who we are and genuine moments of change and growth are very rare, then I don't think the ending is actually that depressing It is in fact a happy ending

Ellie lost *almost* everything But not everything She's still alive, against all odds, and now for the first time in a long time she wants to be Losing everything was the necessary price for her to get to that point

That's the meaning of the title, aside from just being a grimdark expression of the fact that the human race is almost extinct It's about the fact that when pushed into extremity and forced to decide what you really value, the most precious things are very small

It's about how one tiny life was so precious in Joel's eyes he could sacrifice the world for it And it's about convincing Ellie to believe that about herself by letting her hit rock bottom, taking away almost everything that made her life worth living

Getting to a place where she was forced into ruse epiphany You, yourself, are still worth it, your tiny life is still precious, even if you're all you have Even if you have no wife anymore, no child, no community, no career, no grand destiny and no future

You being alive right now is still precious, the most precious thing in the world That tiny chance of your future happiness against all odds is worth everything That's what Joel believed about Ellie and it isn't until the very end that she comes to believe it about herself
