Thesis: the average 18 year old student in, say, York in AD 800 (the middle of the so-called "Dark Ages") had read more, knew more languages, was better trained in logic, could read more music, knew more mathematics and astronomy than the average student from a university today.

Come on dude it's been literally decades since I've played music in any capacity and yet I can go online right now, find sheet music for a popular song and hum the melody and/or pick it out on a keyboard Because I took piano lessons as a kid

In my world that's not particularly special (especially among Asian kids) In Bach's world it was a sign of immense luck and privilege - if just a few things in Bach's life had gone differently his music would never have existed
