We are given no indication at any point that Joel's big problem with the Fireflies is the moral line around Ellie's age, or her inability to consent

No, I'm saying that as an audience it is significant *to me* in its relative depictions of the respective actors.

Okay but to the extent this is a meaningful difference it's kind of cheating It's not a genuine difference between the two men morally, it's just a matter of the situations they've been placed in

And by the same token the game cheats by pointedly focusing on the most wholesome twee moment possible for Jerry and not the part that he's a surgeon for a group who pointedly are described as gleefully engaging in torture and murder. So?

I still feel like all of this discussion could be avoided by saying that in fact both men's daughters get to be sad they're dead, both do wrong in what they do when they kill to avenge them, and the point is not really to make us judge either of them

see I really just do not get that vibe at all, I got the distinct impression the game wants us to *LOATHE* Ellie and lionize Abby.

I fundamentally disagree with this, and I think this is probably where a lot of the overall disagreement is founded.

Yeah this feels like a profound overreaction on the part of the people saying it Like because we're denied the satisfaction of putting a bullet in Abby's brain that's the same thing as saying Abby is a pure and good hero

Like come on the creators weren't that out of touch Of course you're supposed to hate Abby, the sheer number of people who do hate Abby is an indication of that They're not that incompetent

Like literally kne of the very first things you do as her is go through the WLF camp where they're keeping several Seraphites in cages and torturing them, and she says something to the effect of "I'd like to get some time alone with them" while they're all cringing fearfully away

Eh, I think there is an actual common strain of dialogue that Abby is somehow "better" than Ellie, due - bluntly - to having Lev around as a morality pet.
