Ashley Johnson has had such a good career since Growing Pains, like holy shit It's like such a better version of Wil Wheaton's story

It just hit me with full force that the Zoomers most likely have no idea she was on Growing Pains, or what Growing Pains even was

It's kind of impressive the extent to which Growing Pains has pretty much entirely vanished from the cultural consciousness of Gen-Xers and Millennials Like it's really clear that basically nobody derived any artistic inspiration from this show whatsoever

Yeah the show was invented to be the '80s version of the Modern Family conceit and to have this family friendly progressive liberal message (the original point was that they're successful professionals but he works from home so he's the "mom")

But all that was WILDLY derailed by their star becoming an outspoken fundie right at the point where it was too late to get rid of him

I mean what can you really do The point of your show was supposed to be Kirk Cameron's coming of age but his values are wildly opposed to all of your values and he negotiated himself veto power So everything just kind of sputtered to a halt

The invention of Leo's character Luke in the final season was among other things this blatant hijacking the show to give it a new protagonist

Ironically history repeated itself here when the kid from 2 1/2 Men also became a born again Christian and ended up leaving the show (after Charlie Sheen had his flameout several years prior) Now that's a show that was shockingly unkillable

Chuck Lorie or however you spell it has some kind of eldritch Sitcom making power

He just fully admits that there is a formula and applies it without any sense of scruples or shame
