Ashley Johnson has had such a good career since Growing Pains, like holy shit It's like such a better version of Wil Wheaton's story

It just hit me with full force that the Zoomers most likely have no idea she was on Growing Pains, or what Growing Pains even was

It's kind of impressive the extent to which Growing Pains has pretty much entirely vanished from the cultural consciousness of Gen-Xers and Millennials Like it's really clear that basically nobody derived any artistic inspiration from this show whatsoever

Well, yeah. Growing Pains was BAD. It was the apotheosis of crappy '80s family sitcoms. It's what you watched if Family Ties was too edgy for you.

I actually really like Leo's arc for what it was

Leo is probably one of the very few instances of a Cousin Oliver actually working out

Even as a little kid he was so clearly leaps and bounds better at acting than anyone else on the show (Ashley Johnson possibly excepted)

Like I seriously think the producers did that whole thing because they realized how insanely lucky they were to get Leo under contract (In a meta way this is similar to how the Seavers feel about Luke coming to live at their house)

I'm giving Ashley Johnson a pass on this comparison because she was obviously doing the best she could with what they gave her

The adult leads not so much Like it was a serious problem for this show how smugly punchable Alan Thicke is at all times and how even though they tried to write the show around this (his character is a smug psychiatrist who diagnoses everyone he meets) he can't turn it off
