I definitely was too young to fully get that, but at the same time I remember feeling like he never felt like a sitcom character (bc the performance probably wasn’t a mediocre 80s sitcom character performance like the ones he was surrounded by).

It was this amazing serious, earnest version of the thing people do as a joke where someone from the wrong genre wanders into your show Here's a real person dealing with grim gritty social issues like alcoholism and domestic violence who walked into your sitcom set

The adult leads not so much Like it was a serious problem for this show how smugly punchable Alan Thicke is at all times and how even though they tried to write the show around this (his character is a smug psychiatrist who diagnoses everyone he meets) he can't turn it off
