I remember watching the show Primeval, that came out in 2007, and stopping immediately when a "scientist" determined the sex of a skeleton by counting its ribs.

The idea that there are secondary and primary sex characteristics, anatomically, never really sinks in for a lot of people. Like, if a guy just weirdly *cannot* grow facial hair, or if a woman’s voice is in the tenor range, we don’t generally say they’re intersex.
