That makes sense I guess—the sense of execution as performance? The idea of a plausible deniability that allows everybody to walk away without feeling so much like a murderer?

That last bit is a large part of why electric chairs are not used any more. Tended to leave even the witnesses feeling like they had just murdered a man, often quite, quite horrifically, and for a stunningly long length of time, too, if they did the slightest thing wrong.

Like one of the ridiculous things about people fighting back and forth over the current lethal injection protocol is they want what sounds like a foolproof means of inducing quick death *without* the use of any "fun" drugs
