To be honest, I'm actually okay with that casting - having rep for pre-T/non-T guys is legitimately important, and hearing someone with that voice being gendered correctly as male is a hell of a thing.

(I'm a lot more okay with it than I am with live-action folk, I think because voice-acting has some interesting stuff going on with gender already even with cis characters)

The thing I care most about representation-wise is real people of the identity in question getting work, in whatever capacity But you're right, there's already a much bigger gulf between actor and character in VO than there is in on-camera work

The funny thing is in VO work anyone can play any character. So underrepresented people could be hired more today without changing anything. But they aren’t.

Right, it's the whole thing where "colorblindness" just leads to all the existing powerful white people hiring the people in their existing white social networks

Like in all seriousness the reason to say that Black actors must play Black characters isn't just to avoid bad choices and minstrelsy, it's also just to give people a reason not to hire Troy Baker again

Pretty much. Because the opposite is fine. Ashley from Mass Effect was played by a black actress, Kimberly Brooks. She also played an Asari or two.

Haven't we had the conversation before that Ashley may actually be Black but we don't notice bc of the lighting in 1?

I don’t think so. All I know is her voice actor is.

We have this conversation with all of Kimberly Brooks' characters and whether they might be "Black-coded" because she's Black, like Jasper on Steven Universe

And, well, given the number of roles she's played that are obviously and unambiguously white where she uses a "white voice" I think it's a weak case

Like the big viral callout contrasting Rose Quartz as white coded and Jasper as Black coded got a lot more complicated when we find out the real Rose Quartzes are all also voiced by Brooks (because a jasper is a kind of quartz)

(Does this mean that Steven's mom identifying as a Rose Quartz was a form of blackface? Hmm)
