It was the poor despised underclass being given hope and then having it snatched away again Unlike, say, Dantooine in KotOR 2 where the rich family Romeo and Juliet plot ends with "And then they all died in the bombing"

The KOTOR NPC I felt bad for was the "I'm gonna go tell my teacher I have doubts about the Sith!" NPC on Korriban. Like... dude, this is *not* going to end well for you, what's wrong with you?

Was wild that convincing that dude to do that, IIRC, was a *light side* action.

Like, you're convincing this guy to take an action that will not only definitely result in his death, but will be excruciatingly painful the whole time he is dying, which will not be quick.

Yeah the way they decided Jedi morality worked was... a weird mishmash of different principles Although I don't remember this as telling him to *come clean* about having doubts about the Sith but as encouraging him to possibly defect

Although I haven't actually played KotOR 1 in a very long time -- ironically people are completely right that KotOR 2 survived a lot longer in people's minds by being an unfinished game they wanted to fix

All of these old games that have continued to have a community for longer than a decade did so because they were an obviously unfinished mess when they were released and this caused fandom to start getting into modding in order to fix them and this created emotional investment

Like if Bloodlines had been about the same quality of game but not filled with obvious holes throughout there'd be no Bloodlines 2, we wouldn't be talking about it

I mean Almost every character in the first game is nigh-incomprehensibly unlikeable, it's one of the most narratively obnoxious games ever developed I would argue that, given the absolutely abysmal writing in KOTOR1, making it _unfinished_ would just give you an IRL creepypasta

Chris Avellone's personal life was horrific but if we're talking about writing talent the gulf between him and Drew Karpyshyn is enormous

Like yeah sure the Jedi Knight storyline in SWTOR is technically speaking following the broad outline of what KotOR 3 would've been but actually calling it a sequel to KotOR 2 is like saying Community Season 4 is a sequel to Community Season 3

The biggest reason to be mad at SWTOR lorewise is they totally blew the wad of what KotOR 3 would've been about, in as high-budget and elaborate a way as they could, but it was just not good Like letting the two scab dudes write Jeff Winger's reunion with his dad

Thinking about Avellone reminds me of your thing about how common it is for you to have to disown great artists for being abusers and how rare it is to have to disown them for being bigots
