The Last Jedi was a movie that I needed to watch several times to fully understand things. But after doing that, it is a masterpiece that manages to do something fresh while still following off of TFA.

RotJ Luke: *fights, nearly kills who he's trying to save. Throws down lightsaber, is victorious* Ppl watching TLJ: why won't Luke just fight?!

Nothing more emblematic of this than TLJ Luke referring to him as Sidious and everyone in TRoS calling him Palpatine.

What's weird is TROS doesn't really take the OT seriously either. The Resistance and First Order should both care a lot about *The Emperor* being alive and the massive political implications of that, but instead they just care about Palpatine, the character that the fans know.

In a way this reminds me of how people reacted to the handling of Magneto in Grant Morrison's X-Men run: They're angry that Morrison dealt with the character as he had been written up to that point in the 2000s...
-
They wanted a vision of the character preserved in amber from their childhoods (in this case the 1980s). In some ways 'The Last Jedi' is similar...it grapples with the material as a whole and the uncomfortable bits in it even if it doesn't match distorted childhood memories.

It should have been PODRACING on the casino planet, not horsecamels. THAT would've tied into the PT better than any dialog

Rian Johnson likes horses
