And this sounds like a ridiculous grad school kind of reach Until you go back and watch that scene in the movie and realize just how much they made Shelob's face look like a giant vagina

Well, showing boobs would've caused an outcry among the conservative side of LotR fandom and limited their audience due to ratings The game Shadow of War did make the... odd decision to give Shelob an attractive human form thoughpic.twitter.com/D3lWKCfsQM

No lie, prior to the movies coming out, I heard a lot of people talking about how Shelob used to be an attractive woman but got turned into a spider demon thing for her hubris. Which doesn't seem to have any basis in the lore, but maybe that old rumour is why she has that form?

That's literally just recycling the origin of Scylla from Greek mythology

Prior to doing search on Shelob, I assumed that people saying that were right and that's what Tolkien was referencing. Now I think a whole load of people were just very confused about their giant spider people.

In Tolkien's actual canon, all Maiar (angels) started out being able to take attractive humanoid form if they chose, but fallen Maiar specifically lose this ability depending on how far they fall

Like when Sauron's body as Annatar the Lord of Gifts was destroyed in the fall of Numenor it permanently destroyed his ability to look pretty, any body his spirit forms now will look like a twisted corpse or the like because he's been marked by his trauma

It's doubly unlikely that the Giant Spiders have a human form though, because they're not even clearly supposed to be Maiar Tolkien made a big thing about how no one knows where the Spiders came from, their progenitor Ungoliant just kind of coalesced from pure darkness
