I've been trying to think about the first trans character I saw on TV or movies that was actually trans, not just a character in drag, and all the only one I can think of is Unique, from Glee. Which is disappointing as hell, tbh. The world needs more positive trans characters.

I can't think of many at all, even currently. Nomi from Sense8. Sofia from OiTNB (who was played by a trans actress). To be fair, I don't watch much TV overall.

Yep, she was voiced by a cis woman, which is I guess plausible deniability (and, you know, that's who the song's written for). It's kind of like those rock gardens that don't actually have a tree but are laid out in such a fashion as to suggest one is right in front of you
