Bizarrely, it's actually Assassin's Creed that already has the mechanism that you could use to turn this into a cool gameplay/story integration thing This isn't really happening, this is a computer simulation of someone's "genetic memory"

When I revisit older parts of the game and I'm suddenly incredibly powerful and I can kill people effortlessly with a flick of my finger it's because I'm *more real* This right now isn't happening, this is me using my imagination to revisit memories from my past

I'd really really like to spin out a setting based on this, some kind of dream-quest where all the characters are simulations within some existing story who gain or lose power by going forward and back in time from where they're "supposed to be" But I'm lazy

WoW kind of always had this problem but the last expansion was the worst about it. In Legion I killed the god soul of a planet. Now random pirates are level 120, 10 levels higher than that character. Jarring as all hell.

Oh god, yeah. And also, you need to hire a god-soul killer to get the fifteen boar hooves you need apparently.

It just makes so little sense. The entire game could be levelled-out with your only real level progression being skills and all "levelling up" being about is skills and equipment. God of War style, for example. They could even keep microtransactions basically the same, really.
-
Aren't you just coming back around to "Assassins Creed would be better without rpg mechanics". And that's a non starter, because how else are you going to incorporate experience micro payments without levelling mechanics?

I’m playing AC:Odyssey right now and I don’t see what would have been the problem with having enemies of different levels instead of having them all advance with you. Maybe you CAN’T clear a whole fort at lvl 10—maybe you have to come back when you’re stronger. 1/2

And maybe low level guards are only a threat en masse when you’re lvl 40, and wolves are no problem, but bears are lvl 50? Then specific places and enemies are your challenge, instead of whole countries!
