Yes, just as a union formally owes fiduciary loyalty to their membership Which is why a non-union shop is a great deal for the employer, since they have a whole team required to be loyal to them (including you) and no one is required to be loyal to you but yourself

Yeah - at the same time, the reason they're involved is usually because you have some leverage against the company.

HR's job is to play defense for the company They exist because there are employment laws, and that's the offense you have at your back when you get in a fight with your employer Their job is to negotiate a beneficial compromise but that's not the same as being *on your side*
