Jenna Marbles' farewell message to YouTube sounded a lot like Laina Morris' (the Overly Attached Girlfriend) "Being online and existing in semi-public constantly is burning me out, I feel like I can never fully move on from my past persona while I'm here, this isn't fun anymore"

But I can tell you from experience that trying to make that transition is pretty hard and emotionally draining and leaves you feeling really exposed And that's when you're just doing it in a normal social setting and not in front of millions of people

The big difference, of course, is that Morris' past didn't involve some moments of major shitty racism and Marbles' did, and that means now her fans get to blame her burnout on cancel culture SJWs Even when she directly said not to Which is not great

I really respect Marbles' farewell message I respect that it WENT BEYOND the stuff she was supposedly "canceled" for, like she didn't just leave it at "Okay these few videos had these bad jokes and I apologize for those", she disowned her whole original brand

Like, as someone who used to be really into both sets of jokes, a lot of the old school Jenna Marbles bits were like the OAG bits - "Here's a girl who gets why guys think girls are fucked up and agrees they have a point!" The Cool Girl stuff from Gone Girl

And, like, I just wanna say that as much as I agree with Jenna taking accountability for all that she obviously paid a price for it I'm less familiar with her than with Morris but holy shit the OAG "fandom" was gross in hindsight

I remember all the memes her fans made contrasting her character with what they imagined the real Morris to be like - a perfect Chill Girlfriend who hates "OAGs" as much as you do - and God imagine what her actual inbox must've looked like

(That was the unspoken subtext of why she quit, which obviously she didn't talk directly about in the video because that would lead to more of it)

Anyway I like Jenna Marbles and because I like her I fully support her decision to quit I want her to have a long and happy creative career and *because* of that I take her word for it that leaving YouTube (for now or forever) is the right thing to do
