Almost everything about Slatestarcodex is based on a dislike and fear of "woke culture cancel mobs" That's the one cultural commonality they all have despite claiming to be "politically diverse" Back in the day it was even more specific, they specifically despised Gawker Media

That's their guiding ethos It's not a secret at all The one political "side" that's always missing from their "diverse" conclave is the "SJWs", people who participate in Black Lives Matter protests and actively support deplatforming and think #MeToo hasn't gone far enough

What Scott likes to do is attract people to his little salon who are *even more paranoid* about "the wokes" than he is so he can take the position of the moderate, so he can feel like the sane and reasonable one It's really fucking transparent

So he can say to an audience of frothing, raving white supremacists "Your concerns are valid but you're just mistaken about how best to address them" and feel like the most reasonable person in the room

He can blow all this hot air about being "charitable" to BLM activists while none of the enemies he's being "charitable" to are anywhere within fifty miles of his blog

That the primary shared value of SSC is hostility to the Left Whether or not its members identify their *opinions* as left-wing, the shared project is fear and hostility to the left as it actually currently exists as a political force

Or maybe the primary shared value is reason and charity, and you interpret that as hostility because reason and charity are values that you're not big on

I don't interpret it that way, that's the truth, that's just what it is in plain and simple terms What do you get when nine liberals extend reason and charity to one Nazi

"What do you get when nine liberals extend reason and charity to one Nazi" Remember America before the Great Awokening? Richard Spencer et al only came to prominence *after* lefties started obsessively talking about "whiteness"

Lol, well, leftists have been "talking about whiteness" since I was in college so if that's the cause and effect of Richard Spencer it was pretty gradual I do notice that his *decrease* in prominence after someone coldcocked him was very rapid though

I should note, a ton of people online - *especially* the ones who love reason and logic and debate so damned much - are usually fantastically ignorant of the history of left activism and thought. They think it all started last year with what they saw on TV.

From what little I have seen Scott doesn't have much grasp of that history either. He and the people on there parrot stupid points based on what a 1st year undergrad did in Poli Sci 101 and talk about the college campus as the center of lefty thought and activism. It isn't.

Yeah, we actually know why Richard Spencer rose to prominence - because he put on a suit and half the world fell over itself writing puff pieces about the “dapper Nazi” just because he never personally wore an ss uniform

It wasn't just Richard Spencer. The entire New Right movement was a reaction to woke thought
