It's the thing about the Fermi paradox and how there's some kind of "filter" technological life must pass through to become spacefaring and that's why interstellar civilization doesn't seem to exist

Intelligent life by its nature fails to coordinate at scale until the oceans evaporate or nukes drop. The notion that truth doesn't matter spreads through populations until even those worried about the climate are paradoxically against nuclear energy. Defectors kill us all.

If we're going to talk about "defectors" and the Prisoner's Dilemma and other nerd shit I am on record as saying the ending to Cabin in the Woods is one of my favorite movie endings ever

"The only way for the human race to survive is for you to make the rational choice to sacrifice your own lives Otherwise EVERYONE will die" *smokes joint* "Guess you're gonna die then"

"But that doesn't make any sense! YOU die either way! You don't benefit at all from making the selfish choice!" "I benefit from seeing the look on your face right now"

This is a take with a nerdy white man pedigree, this was Peter Watts' rant from his Rifters trilogy before he did Blindsight The ruling class is expert at rigging the game They can ALWAYS set up the reward tables so they win either way - whether you pick Cooperate or Defect

You comply and you do what they tell you and you get fucked over You defect and you fight back and you get fucked over WORSE and the pain you cause them doesn't come close to what they can do to you But what will take them down in the end is simple, it's called spite

Spite is an old concept but it has a specific meaning in game theory You change the nature of the game The goal is no longer to maximize my utility but to maximize your pain I will cut off my nose to spite your face I will throw myself into the gears and die to cost you $20

You take away people's hope long enough and spite is all they have left They don't want anything anymore for themselves, they see they're getting nothing but a raw deal the turns to ashes in their mouths All they want is to hurt you, that's the only victory they care about

That's why the corporations will lose They don't remember how spite works They think like an idealized Homo economicus, they're not programmed to understand good old Homo sapiens sapiens, the red-blooded animal sensation of pure hate

Spite is our only hope Strategic "irrationality" is the only rationality It is the *fear* of spite - the possibility that someone will burn down everything for pure vengeance - that is the only way to enforce certain versions of cooperation in the iterated Prisoner's Dilemma
