But, in general, I don't think it's possible to be passingly familiar with Scott's blog and not know that one of his hobbyhorses is "IQ realism" and biological determinism, and the distance between this and eugenics is at best a hairsbreadth

What I don't get is how you argue for using any tactic available to destroy your enemies, including disinfo, slander, lies and bullying, and then expect us to just accept this characterization of Scott with no receipts. Why should anybody trust what you say?

Yeah it's almost like I'm trying to exercise social power by ginning up an emotional reaction among people who already agree with me and are on my side and don't particularly care about winning debates with the unconvinced

I don't actually have any kind of Svengali mind control powers but a lot of other people who have history with Scott are fully willing to get on this bandwagon without interrogating me for receipts Maybe if he had more self awareness he'd ask himself why that is

Maybe it's because I'm autistic or something, but I honestly don't understand your way of thinking about this. Your ability to harness clout with such tactics speaks ill of humanity. We aren't going to make it through the Great Filter because of people like you (on all sides).

It's the thing about the Fermi paradox and how there's some kind of "filter" technological life must pass through to become spacefaring and that's why interstellar civilization doesn't seem to exist

It is "rationalism"-adjacent, one of their leading lights, Robin Hanson, wrote a paper about it in the 90s Honestly to me it's mostly wank The filter is probably just that interstellar travel of any kind is too expensive to ever happen

You don't even have to get dramatic about the human race blowing ourselves up, we just have to not build starships and fill up the universe at any point Which is fine, because that's a stupid thing to do and there's no actual reason to do it

The whole "But if a species doesn't die out then it MUST expand infinitely to fill the stars" thing exposes a lot of incredibly silly assumptions behind Hanson's whole toxic worldview

It's like their view of the Singularity and how they just assume there's no such thing as a hard technological ceiling because the idea offends them If a computer can keep making itself smarter exponentially it MUST become God
