Scott is friendly with white nationalists, and to the extent that Scott has access to respectability and clout, he provides them access to it too

I simply haven't seen enough evidence to warrant "friendly". Perhaps "patient with". I like for the world to have some diversity. Scott is a weirdo. I'm reminded of this:https://www.npr.org/2017/08/20/544861933/how-one-man-convinced-200-ku-klux-klan-members-to-give-up-their-robes …

Lol no no no The Nazis Scott rolls with have been way more effective at moving him right than he's moved them in any direction Do you think r/slatestarcodex and r/themotte's posters have gotten *less* fashy from 2016-2020?

My main point is that the world is better with Scott in it. You might not like that he doesn't ban enough people, but I would never have even heard of these people if not for Scott. Their depravity is fully on display, rather than sequestered in hidden bubbles.

Pffft No it isn't If I want to sit in on a jerkoff session about someone discovering basic social science concepts like they're brand new I can listen to Joe Rogan Bonus, I will probably actually have less exposure to actual raving Nazis in the process

And no, hidden bubbles are good Isolating people and preventing them from connecting and coordinating with others who agree with them is a way to limit their power This is basic shit *They themselves* would not seek exposure if it was of no benefit to them, they're not stupid

FFS that's what the Komogorov essay is about, Scott meditating on the power of censorship to "destroy ideas" and all that shit If censorship somehow actually only helped Nazis why would Nazis be so upset about it, do you think they're THAT clever

I just disagree with you about Scott's platform providing something they don't already have. YouTube is a hotbed of right wing shit, and the algos send people right to it. I'd rather they have to at least pretend to appeal to rational thought where they'll be challenged.

I feel like you sink your own point when you acknowledge that they only have to pretend to appeal to rational thought, while the dude platforming their insane shit goes "wow, that's really insightful" and softballs them, thus lending legitimacy to them

Scott is just a Joe Rogan who doesn't lift He's a Joe Rogan who replaces Joe Rogan's "Oh, wow, shit, I never thought of that" with 10,000 words of his own verbiage that don't actually add anything more than Rogan does

And much like Rogan he presents an essentially toxic worldview in negative space, for plausible deniability He doesn't actively *say* much other than this bullshit about positivity and open-mindedness and listening to every point of view

But he's always careful to give right-wing cranks an extra dollop of credulity and relevance and withhold it from "mainstream" left-of-center opinions You know, for balance, to push back against the stifling consensus

*Has* feminism gone too far? *Was* the civil rights movement a mistake? *Could it possibly be* that 20th-century history can be explained by too many people with bad genes reproducing? Gosh, I dunno, let's explore these questions
