The price difference in new cars is usually a grand or less (and in some cases zero) and current automatics commonly outperform manuals in fuel efficiency, assuming you are shifting perfectly The car thief thing may be true but I have no idea how to measure or quantify that

Manual transmissions also break faster and need to be replaced much more often, so even assuming better fuel efficiency, the cost analysis skews more the other way the longer you own the car
