Someone really needs to do a deep dive into the parallels between all the anti-mask concern trolling and the discourse about mandatory seatbelts in the 80s because this is infuriatinghttps://twitter.com/dwallacewells/status/1275390158574149634?s=19 …

There's a general discussion to be had about "passive measures" vs "active measures" when it comes to any kind of safety Passive measures are ALWAYS BETTER It's always better to not require people to be conscious about their actions because THEY WON'T BE
Show this thread -
There is a huge, constant debate about this in every field and there are always experts concern trolling that passive protection "makes you stupid" and "trains you not to take responsibility for yourself" Okay but you CAN'T TRAIN PEOPLE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY THEY WON'T DO IT

They have this argument about EVERYTHING Seatbelts will just make people drive less safely, a seatbelt isn't as good as being a careful driver in the first place Bike helmets aren't as good as being good at riding a bike Etc, etc

My dad was like this, I remember him bitching constantly about seatbelt laws when they came in when I was a little kid He worked as a scientist and wouldn't wear eye protection in the lab either Said in his opinion goggles "make you careless"

"The important thing is always having situational awareness, to know when something is or isn't dangerous, and if you let the lawyers tell you to wear goggles all the time you stop thinking about it, and that's more dangerous in the long run"

My God, what a shitty argument Do the goggles WORK or do they not work If the goggles do nothing, then fine, stop wearing them or get better goggles If they do work, then isn't reducing the total number of people who go blind the more important thing

I got in a huge fight with him over this Macho bullshit, the idea that the world should be a big constant test for competence, that it should harshly punish people for unmindfulness The injuries will continue until behavior improves
Show this thread -
I think the world should in fact be designed for stupid people Not just because "people are stupid" but I, personally, am stupid My IQ on written tests notwithstanding, I am one of those distractible, careless, brain fart kind of people
Show this thread -
Not having a seatbelt or a helmet or goggles would not make me "more aware of my vulnerability" I simply do not have that awareness and if the world weren't built with constant passive safety tolerances everywhere, I would die
Show this thread -
Maybe if I'd had better doctors as a kid and we lived in a less ableist country I would be able to show you an official diagnosis and call this accommodation for disability But you know what, who cares Nobody should be punished with death for fucking up
Show this thread -
It doesn't matter whether they fuck up consistently because they're biologically wired to do so or they never fuck up except for this one time due to a series of wild coincidences Punishing someone for either one is terrible
Show this thread -
It's Rawls' veil of ignorance, if we can't make the world a safer place for people who fuck up then what's the point of all of this
Show this thread -
And this argument is worse for an infectious disease, where it's NOT ABOUT YOU GETTING INFECTED YOU aren't the one who gets punished for your risky behavior, the rest of the world does You're taking people hostage to your arrogant need to prove your competence
