As someone who's been a fan of Chris Avellone for a long time I guess the specific lesson for people like me is when famous people get fired from their prestigious jobs for no obvious reason we should stop assuming it's just because suits are malicious incompetents

Remember the period of time when he was hustling all over the place and people were like "Why does legendary writer Chris Avellone of all people have to make money by guest starring on everyone else's Kickstarter? What happened to his full time job?"

It turns out that those unspecified reasons a legendary creative talent might be "difficult to work with" quite possibly include being a raging alcoholic who creeps on any woman he sees

And us ignorant fanboys who sneer at "difficult to work with" complaints - "Who cares how difficult it is, if you get the chance to work on the next Planescape Torment?" - have no idea what we're talking about and should shut up about it

The fandom reaction to instinctively defend people who are "difficult to work with" because we don't have to actually experience any of the difficulties and just enjoy the finished product means that we're all complicit in helping make creative industries an abusive nightmare

I guess gaming is truly a mature industry now that we have to reckon with the fact that our beloved game design rockstars are awful in exactly the same way as actual rockstars (Cf. that "We have groupies?" scene in The Social Network)

no piece of art is worth having a completely shitty creative director abuse his staff. Yes im talking about the shining.

This is a thing in all industries. I have had multiple client engagements where I wish I could have said: "you are the biggest security issue in the company, fire yourself" to the person that hired us.

Also "difficult to work with" is a vague enough euphemism that it gets applied regularly to people who have neurodivergent "difficulties" like wanting a clear set of instructions and occasional deadline extensions.

It's not great to know that, on account of ableism, "easily losing track of time" is heavily conflated with "repeatedly abusing one's colleagues".
