As someone who's been a fan of Chris Avellone for a long time I guess the specific lesson for people like me is when famous people get fired from their prestigious jobs for no obvious reason we should stop assuming it's just because suits are malicious incompetents

And us ignorant fanboys who sneer at "difficult to work with" complaints - "Who cares how difficult it is, if you get the chance to work on the next Planescape Torment?" - have no idea what we're talking about and should shut up about it

The fandom reaction to instinctively defend people who are "difficult to work with" because we don't have to actually experience any of the difficulties and just enjoy the finished product means that we're all complicit in helping make creative industries an abusive nightmare

I guess gaming is truly a mature industry now that we have to reckon with the fact that our beloved game design rockstars are awful in exactly the same way as actual rockstars (Cf. that "We have groupies?" scene in The Social Network)

I don't wanna say bitter self loathing is a "red flag" because there are honestly just as many terrible people whose brand is based on boundless cheerful self confidence But yeah it is unfortunate

This is the first I’ve heard about this, but as someone who has partook in some of his work, it does not surprise me. Avellone always came across as someone who thought his opinions were the hottest shit.

I was always dubious about how he aired most of his dirty laundry on r/p/gco/d/ex, which is a virulent sewer. I admit I did like seeing him work on games I picked up. But wow, now that I know... a lot makes sense now.

I think that part of what gets ignored is that most of the great creators got that way through some sort of pain, loss, or suffering, and they might not always handle it perfectly? That's why a lot of comedians can be pretty shitty people. Same with musicians and actors.

That's truly no excuse for why they act that way, but I think they are struggling so much at times that they slip in their control. Some people internalize their pain like Robin Williams, and some externalize it, or most likely a combination of both.
