It's like if the wizard book lady had actually had a horrible TĒ R F villain in one of her books, and the heroes were disgusted by her, but she won, and you realized in retrospect that that was the whole point

Or, as in the case of me watching Chinatown, I went in knowing about Polanski and the plot was shocking to me because I kept thinking "well it can't be THAT, that would be telling on himself" and then, welp

Death and the Maiden is worse, it literally ends with the bad guy giving a full confession and accounting of his motives

Death and the Maiden takes place in an analogue of Chile after the fall of the Pinochet regime, in the home of a married couple who were previously dissidents - the husband had escaped into exile, the wife had spent years as a prisoner

The plot kicks off with their neighbor seeking shelter from a storm, and the wife slowly coming to believe that he's the doctor who raped and tortured her while she was in prison, leading to her kidnapping him in order to try to force him into a confession

And our viewpoint character is the husband, who's stuck trying to figure out if this is all true or if she's crazy and delusional

And, like, the big moment of the movie, the Wham Line, is when she drags the guy to the edge of a cliff and he's absolutely certain he's going to die and he drops the act and lets it all come vomiting out of him, his full confession

And then the husband is about to shove him over the cliff and then collapses sobbing "I can't do it, I'm sorry, I can't do it" And the wife just wordlessly unties him and lets him go

The ending of the movie is the doctor and the couple seeing each other at the opera and the couple just ignores him while he stares at them with this unreadable conflicted expression He got away with it, sure But he'll always know they know his secret, he's been exposed

What she needed from him was his confession, to admit she wasn't crazy and this really happened and who he really is And some part of him needed to confess it too, and now that he's done so he'll never be able to be free of that confession again
