I was *just talking* about how this supposedly progressive groundbreaking show ends with an episode that establishes Starfleet policy explicitly does not allow women to be captains And the point of the episode is this policy is correcthttps://twitter.com/nberlat/status/1273100694493581312 …

Gene Roddenberry later disowned that episode, admitting it was sexist. But it's still part of the Trek canon.

Star Trek canon is nebulous at best. Especially when it comes to how progressive they are. Discovery pretty firmly establishes women can be captains at this time period

Well yeah way back in the 90s most Star Trek fans pretty much rejected the premise of this episode and decided Janice Lester was just crazy I would hope at this point most people just decided this episode "didn't really happen" at all

I feel like Star Trek, unlike say Star Wars, benefits from retconning a lot more than nerds generally like. The "point" is a progressive future, and it should be updated to reflect that. For example, there's a TNG ep where Riker doesn't know what a gender neutral pronoun is.

And it feels stupid, more than anything else, that there's no concept of "they", especially since they all seem pretty read up on earth history

Well yeah obviously it needs retconning because it's supposed to be the future of our world and we are quite far in the future at this point 1997 came and went with no Eugenics Wars, we're coming up on the Bell Riots in 2024
