I feel like Star Trek, unlike say Star Wars, benefits from retconning a lot more than nerds generally like. The "point" is a progressive future, and it should be updated to reflect that. For example, there's a TNG ep where Riker doesn't know what a gender neutral pronoun is.

And it feels stupid, more than anything else, that there's no concept of "they", especially since they all seem pretty read up on earth history
