To me Straussians always seemed kind of childlike. This obsession w/secrecy & initiation, sort of like high-level Scientologists who imagine that the Xemu story is this great, mindblowing thing and not the stuff of decades old pulp SF

This was ultimately a thing for Randians as well, wasn't it? She had a full blown personality cult around her. The segment about it in "Why People Believe Weird Things" might be the only good thing Michael Shermer ever wrote.

Yup it's a direct roman a clef, everyone in the play was directly based on a real person there that night
