Further to my Nation piece about David Brooks's recuperative (pro-marriage) "critique" of the nuclear family, I'm bookmarking a hypothesis: Get Out (2017) inaugurated an attempted reckoning with the upper-class white American family. E.g.: Knives Out (2019), Ready or Not (2019).

Thinking of 1941's /Little Foxes/ too... I feel like this genre reckoning with [upper-class] kinship as inherently exclusive and predatory was much more common but died out at some point...

Which was directly based on Lillian Hellman's deep dislike of her maternal grandmother's side of the family (ironically named the Marxes) and her maternal grandmother herself in particular (Regina is based on her grandma and Alexandra is based on her mom)
