Uhura isn't actually in this episode TOS was a pretty troubled production in its final season so a lot of series regulars stop showing up toward the end, but it's quite possible she isn't in it because Nichelle Nichols wouldn't participate

(She revealed in her autobiography she had previously had a huge fight with Gene because a script had her take the helm and he nixed that saying it wasn't right to have a woman drive the ship This episode *revolves around the idea that this is an actual rule*)

Anyway, yes, before the Abramsverse movies it was a very popular trivia thing to ask people who the one actor other than William Shatner was who canonically portrayed Captain Kirk (it was Sandra Smith)

Imagine if this episode -- and Star Trek TOS as a whole -- had ended with Kirk stuck like this and Spock being all "I am certain we shall adjust in time, Captain"

Turnabout Intruder aired on the final day of the Stonewall Riots so that timeline would have gotten extremely weird

I can imagine this happening as somehow being the result of them knowing the show was getting canceled and deciding to permanently burn their bridges with William Shatner

Imagine the drag queens of the village hailing Captain Kirk as a new icon, to Shatner's chagrin and George Takei's quiet consternation

Leonard Nimoy, whose character is the primary hero of this episode (since the real Kirk ends up locked in the brig for a delusional hysteric), absolutely despised it as sexist drivel and would probably have appreciated this revised ending, despite being friends with Shatner

A lot of people point out that Gene kind of contradicted himself here because the original Star Trek pilot *does* have a woman in command Captain Pike's XO Number One is a woman, and she takes full command of the Enterprise when he gets captured, and does a really good job at it

However, Gene wrote that role so he could work with his mistress Majel Barrett He wrote "Turnabout Intruder" while he was in the middle of being taken to the cleaners in the divorce with his first wife, because of said mistress So, you know, people evolve
