Arthur Chu added,
Dan in there yet again not knowing a damn thing about anything, this time with what the words "autonomous" and "autarky" mean.
Words like "autonomous" are just natural ground for motte-and-bailey arguments.
I don't get the reference. What do fortifications have to do with it?
It's something a philosopher came up with a long ago, basically a way to describe arguing or using terminology in bad faith
Switching between two different definitions of terms or framing of rhetoric depending on what's useful to you Like how a fortified town has a wider, more expansive footprint (the actual town, the "bailey") and a central tower you retreat to when under attack (the "motte")
When you're actually out doing your thing rallying people to your cause you're in the bailey, but whenever you actually come under serious attack you retreat to the much smaller, more cramped but far more defensible motte
So, e.g., the line that alternative medicine practitioners love, "The terrain makes the disease, not the germ" The motte is this very narrow definition of what that means -- "A germ's presence by itself can't define the progression of a disease, your overall health matters"
Everyone agrees with that, it's obviously true, but also no one cares because it doesn't have any obvious implications other than that yes, people should stay healthy beyond just killing germs
But the bailey is the actually serious beliefs they base their actual activism on Vaccines and antibiotics being dangerous and ineffective and unnecessary Being able to keep yourself from COVID-19 purely through exercise and vitamin supplements and meditation
But as soon as you try to debate them on this the flip to the motte comes instantly "Oh, you think that someone can be horribly unhealthy and eat an awful diet but just as long as they wash their hands they're somehow immune to getting sick"
Fantastic example and analogy.
