It's supposed to be ironic and show that the crowd has Jesus' blood on their hands because Barabbas actually is a violent revolutionary and a murderer while Jesus is innocent

But if in real life Jesus IS Barabbas (because "bar-Abbas" just means "Son of the Father" and Jesus used the word "Abba", Father, to mean God all the time) then splitting him up like this represents Christians cutting themselves off from their past as Jewish rebels
