Yes, this! And I could accept Cedric, because sometimes there is The One Death in kids' books under extraordinary circumstances, and it made a decent midpoint Wham Moment. But to do that well, IMO, you have to have The One Death be the low point and come back up.

Whereas she doubled down on Gritty Realism, which made the previous books lack any sense. Reminds me of Buffy after "The Body." In general, when a genre writer tries selfconsciously going Serious and Adult, the result sucks.
