I will legit defend JKR's original manuscript that made her famous That the reason Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone went viral is that it feels like a goofy silly kid's adventure but has surprisingly dark undertones and the ending is surprisingly deephttps://twitter.com/OwenAdamsYT/status/1272294783147560960 …

Plus, Harry and the rest of characters never actually fix any of the societal problems that helped voldy fall to evil and rise in power
-
Remember how J.k wanted us to to think the former Nazi who killed Harry’s parents and abused Harry for years was a great guy because he loved or somewhat obsessed over Harry’s mom?

alternatively, the trouble is that she just didn't *commit.* she needed to take the books in an adult direction as both the readers and the characters aged. but that would have meant actually getting in to the *real* dark underside of the story, not the obvious "Voldemort Bad!"
-
as you have mentioned, getting in to just how incredibly fucked the whole wizarding world is--from the aurors to the house elves to the mandate of secrecy itself--all those things that were cotton candy fun to children are *actually the bad parts*

This was my exact problem. It was cute goofy kids' literature, and then in the last book she said "how will I make it dark and gloomy? I know, I'll kill some characters" and that was that.

And it was all wrapped up with, “AND THEY ALL GOT MARRIED AND LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER. THE END.”

It’s funny because I’ve read all the books and seen all the movies and it always seemed clear this was an effed-up culture. A violent fascist tried to take over and was barely defeated and everyone tried to cover it up and pretend he never existed.
