Hot take: Harry Potter isn't as blatant as future isekai, like it straddles the line between "isekai" and more general "Chosen One narratives" But it's the world's most popular isekai https://twitter.com/AnaMardoll/status/1272191907414913024 …

This is the first time I've encountered this term, but "Harry Potter, Futurama, and Fresh Prince of Bel Aire are all in the same genre" is the most clear explanation of a new concept to me I've ever seen.

Lol I think "Fish Out of Water" is broad enough that you would really just call it a trope or a theme, not a genre

Like Fresh Prince, to me, would only be an isekai if every episode were about Will's basketball prowess and him being the most popular kid at his new school

Just like Fry from Futurama is a parody of Buck Rogers, who legitimately is the original science fiction isekai hero (frozen dude from the present day wakes up in the future and saves the world) For most of the story the point is Fry isn't good at anything and isn't special

Although I do think that the "advantages" that the main character brings to the new setting only need to be focused on for a few episodes; an isekai plot can just be an excuse to get the ball rolling. Eventually Fry is basically just a normal dude; his backstory doesn't matter.

Until it goes full circle and is full isekai tropes again with the Brainspawn arc where Fry is the only being who can save the universe because he's his own grandfather

sure but that isn't directly connected to his origin, anyone native to 3000 could have done the same thing by traveling to the 2940s
