I just don't know that "These people aren't even X" instead of "These people are bad examples of X who give X a bad name" is a useful way to argue Like the former seems to much more readily turn into an academic debate where once you say it you don't have to do anythinghttps://twitter.com/9BillionTigers/status/1272279357340348416 …

Yeah - with "TERF" there's probably some value in distinguishing the self-identified feminists among the anti-trans activists, from the ones who are also anti-feminists.

The thing is "TERF" *used* to describe a specific group of anti-trans activists who did strongly identify as "radical feminists" specifically and who were steeped in the language/culture of that tradition But then they went viral and all the anti-trans people started saying it

Like that's the thing, the transphobes and TERFs actually are literally merging The antifeminist Religious Right realized that using the toolkit of talking points the TERFs created was very effective, more powerful than them going mask-off with their own talking points

You have people like Rod Dreher approvingly citing The Transsexual Empire and talking about "male-pattern violence" and whatnot The fact that this is in many ways a blatantly disingenuous, manipulative play doesn't matter, it works really well

The transphobes are consciously all in on this strategy to use "feminism" as a meme to split the liberal/left political coalition and isolate trans people and their allies It has worked *spectacularly* well in the UK for a lot of reasons specific to UK feminism as a culture

So, like, the seemingly sweeping claim "TERFism is the intellectual wing of transphobia, 'TERF' is to 'transphobe' as 'eugenicist' is to 'racist'" seems justified to me It wasn't always like that and doesn't have to be that way but that's the situation on the ground

It's the sheer blatant fuckery of Catholics who two years ago clearly were saying lesbianism was a grave sin and a sign of moral degeneracy now openly borrowing talking points like "AGPs are het men using transition as a ploy to colonize lesbian spaces"

They, themselves, may not even see it as hypocrisy, just as a hierarchy of greater and lesser evils But it doesn't matter in the end, what matters is the practical reality of everyone realizing the cool thing to do now is phrase all your transphobia as "feminist" if you can

This is a real question, not a rhetorical one: Is that happening on Fox News or in the Trump administration?

The HHS rule this week makes no pretense of feminism, and proudly strikes protections for gay people along with trans people, and restricts abortion rights in the process. That's just standard right-wing rhetoric.
