All authors are angry that our work is being stolen and handed out for free. It’s ultimately a product that is being stolen from the creator. If it were a more physical object would you understand better?

Unless I'm missing something, the books are still available for loan on IA, just not unrestrictedly

That part I get and it's something I want to ensure doesn't happen. Thing is, it seems like most people arguing seem to agree that the original lending system was fine and don't want IA to be shut down due to this lawsuit. So I guess people are talking past each other?

Do you agree
@authkdcarrillo and@arthur_affect? You were fine with the original loaning program and don't want IA to be shut down? Or am I misrepresenting your opinions?2 replies 0 retweets 1 like -
I don't want the IA as a whole to be "shut down" and I think turning it into this all-or-nothing question is a pretty scummy PR move from people defending their actions

I haven't read all the supporting documentation for the lawsuit but there really does seem to be a certain amount of all-or-nothingness in the lawsuit itself. FWIW.

The lawsuit explicitly wants to shut down the whole *Open Library* It has no comment to make on the entire rest of the Internet Archive that has nothing to do with print publishing

That's an extrapolation journalists made by calculating the maximum amount of statutory damages if you multiply it by every possible act of infringement The actual plaintiffs haven't named any dollar amounts
