even if you're convinced you won't "win" in the long run, I don't understand how people can be so averse to striving for harm reduction in the near-term

The way tournament chess is scored, a LOT of the effort in chess games ends up being the player who knows they can't win (unless their opponent massively fucks up) fighting to turn the L into a draw

And of course to be ready in case the opponent DOES massively fuck up, which does happen once in a while, even at top level play
