police shouldn't have power to do traffic stops. having someone with a gun pull over random citizens for infractions and misdemeanors is obviously dangerous and unjust.

I've heard the argument that in countries where traffic enforcement basically doesn't exist, traffic *looks* like a terrifying chaotic mess to American eyes but the roads still function and people get where they want to go and are arguably in some ways more efficient

some european countries just use a ton of traffic cameras; enough that traffic violations are certain to be caught. people just get mailed tickets.

NYC used to have a force of brown-uniformed traffic agents to enforce traffic laws and hand out parking tickets. I'm pretty sure they weren't armed. They got merged into the NYPD in the '90s.

Except - and this is super important - there has been no proven correlation between camera enforcement and road safety improvements. Now that’s not to say you don’t have a fair point about the way the US handles traffic stops. I’m just saying don’t make things worse

A ton of community activists on the ground in poor neighborhoods are fervently anti-camera, it was a huge campaign in Cleveland (and a successful one)

By “worse” I mean “don’t introduce a new problem” - sounds like locals already have it in hand :)
