"So you're saying that in your ideal world people would all pay additional taxes and then those taxes should go to a salary for any rando who posts smut on AO3" Well I think all the randos should all get a salary for doing nothing (UBI) but that's beside the point

"But Arthur, people would absolutely game such a system, they would mirror content or archive it or spoof their own IP to avoid giving people money for clicks and steal clicks from others" Yeah I know That's already the world we live in now, only worse, because ads are involved

And advertising-based models are, like, the worst - combining all the downsides of all the other models And the specific way in which advertisers decide want to get paid is what incentivizes the consolidation of giant corporate content hosts who spy on everybody

FWIW, there have been many swings at this. Never seems to stick. I remember "Subscribe To Web" a few years ago floated at Mozilla. Seems logistically tough https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzwYn5IpP3wtbmhPMEdNV1Ayb1k/view …

More recently, stuff like Firefox Better Web with Scroll https://firstlook.firefox.com/betterweb/

I often think about how we could get back to a "patron" model where a wealthy benefactor pays an artist a retainer to produce
-
But instead of relying on billionaires whims, just get the government to be the sole patron, and fund patronage via taxes

This is exactly what we're working on
@thirdwebco. I'd love to talk to you about your thoughts on how we can make the web better with this model! Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Probably the most viable approach to something like this would be a tax similar to the blank media levys, but instead of paying out to the people whose content is being read, it goes into a big fund that does grants for smaller arts projects.
-
Paying out to the people whose content you view A) Is impossible without mass surveillance of everyone’s surfing habits B) Would be immediately, incredibly games C) Would mostly benefit big corporations like Disney, who don’t really need the help
