One thing is that if you make an artsy indie game and it looks like an artsy indie game it means I am going to expect something "subversive" like this from the beginning and it will therefore not really subvert anything

Not a knockoff. The first game in that series came out 5 years before the first Call of Duty, and even a year before the first Medal of Honor. This is also notable as both those series started in WW2, while this was modern from the beginning.
