my favorite video game move is for the game to put an axe in your hand and make it so you can interact with this world solely via axe murder and then look at you and go "wow man that's really fucked up that you would murder everyone with an axe

Undertale explicitly DOES give you the option to resolve fights in a nonviolent way, so I don't think I'd say this applies. I think it's fine for the narrative to punish you for using violence if you did have the option to NOT do so.

In fact, Undertale goes the exact opposite way here - it's only if you play nonviolently that you really interact with the mechanics of the game The "Genocide Run" quickly turns into a boring slog of hitting the same button again and again

The fact that Attack "always works" and Spare is usually a puzzle where you have to figure out how to do it is a very strong signal from the game that the latter is what it wants you to do
