I literally did my college history thesis on this quote from the President of GM in the 1950s, "Who is a consumer? Show me a consumer" About advertising and marketing leading to a new identity formation among the American public in the postwar era etc etc It wasn't that greathttps://twitter.com/arthur_affect/status/1271730272631848960 …

We basically can look at two ways to do things, high prices/high wages or low prices/low wages Who's actually important, the citizen at producer or the citizen as consumer And we switched over to doing the latter in the 80s - that's the "neoliberal consensus"

But my point is, all of us are both workers and customers at some point in our lives, unless we are very rich

And although you can say the very rich are the only true enemy, nonetheless we've all had the thought at some point "Fuck this goddamn employee" as a customer, and "Fuck this goddamn customer" as an employee

And while there are no absolutes and every situation is unique... The former was probably you being wrong and the latter was probably you being right Fuck the customers Customers can all go to hell

The whole Cult of Customer Service and specifically the slogan "The customer is always right" is in fact a big part of why society started to go to hell

(Yes, I know, "What if the employee was being racist?" I have said before that I think kneejerk "Nobody should get fired ever for any reason" sentiments are ridiculous That said, if you don't *generally sympathize* with "You know what fuck the customers" you're not on the left)

That's the whole point of my favorite part of The Grapes of Wrath To paraphrase, "A Red is any sumbitch who just wants a bigger paycheck without providing additional value to the customer" "Well then, hell, I'm a Red! Everyone's a Red!"

And that slogan doesn't even mean what customers think it means. They think it means "I should get everything I want" when it means that if you sell striped socks and people want to buy argyle socks, you should stock argyle socks.
