authors especially a motherfucker because in one moment they'll talk about "i was only paid $1500 by this billionaire company for my book" and in the next go "but it's THE PIRATES that are the problem"

in some cases, like that, the authors are just very, very, very, VERY fucking stupid. wendig is stupid, but he's also a selfish asshole, cuz he has money to burn! and he doesn't spend it supporting indie creators!

Well, more often you'll see authors saying "I got paid an advance that never earned out but it got my foot in the door and paid my bills for a while and if trad publishing didn't exist and I had to self-pub on Amazon I'd never even have started"

funny that i've seen people self-publishing smutty erotica webcomics or patreon funded webcomics and online serials do better than these bunch of jokers and without losing their fucking dignity.

and in any case: they don't fucking care all that much about their companies having too much power and too much money and never giving any of it. if they shut down all the pirates, they'd still be letting those companies step all over them. zero change.

"yes amazon and all these companies are destroying the entire fucking planet and eventually will do everything in their power to pay us as close to slave wages as possible but in the meanwhile i briefly got an advance". sounds like idiots to me.

the publishing industry doesn't need to 'implode', per se, but none of these fucking idiots are even invested in reducing their chokehold of power and wealth. it's just "well, worked for me!" - even when it didn't, actually! - and moving on.

are these fuckers regularly going "hey wouldn't it be nice if we could fucking make these companies actually pay us well, give us way better payouts, as they get ever richer and we get ever poorer?" no! they fucking shit their pants over pirates constantly instead!

SFWA and the Authors Guild are two unions that I know have position papers that go on at length about how the biggest problem with the industry isn't royalties being too low but a general constant downward pressure on pricing

At the very least, it seems hard to dispute that this downward pressure exists - it's the whole thing Amazon vs Hachette was fought over And, yes, if the size of the pie shrinks rapidly enough then how big a piece you get becomes an academic question

Like, I dunno how royalties are the problem if people just don't pay for shit The eventual effect of widespread piracy is to drop prices to zero, and 100% of zero is still zero
