SFWA and the Authors Guild are two unions that I know have position papers that go on at length about how the biggest problem with the industry isn't royalties being too low but a general constant downward pressure on pricing

At the very least, it seems hard to dispute that this downward pressure exists - it's the whole thing Amazon vs Hachette was fought over And, yes, if the size of the pie shrinks rapidly enough then how big a piece you get becomes an academic question
