fucking get some goddamn perspective and some goddamn priorities and remember that the 'struggling' big publishers... aren't actually struggling. they are doing just fucking fine. they've adapted. while. still. giving. nothing. to. artists.

Like, seriously, that's the kind of offensive thing about this Randos on social media going "It would be so great if the publishing industry imploded tomorrow and all the big companies went out of business and every author was an indie self-publisher They would be set free"

does every artist and author agree like, you dipshit: have you not seen the artists who have talked about how spotify and their publishers exploit them and actually it's shit or authors doing the same

authors especially a motherfucker because in one moment they'll talk about "i was only paid $1500 by this billionaire company for my book" and in the next go "but it's THE PIRATES that are the problem"

in some cases, like that, the authors are just very, very, very, VERY fucking stupid. wendig is stupid, but he's also a selfish asshole, cuz he has money to burn! and he doesn't spend it supporting indie creators!

Well, more often you'll see authors saying "I got paid an advance that never earned out but it got my foot in the door and paid my bills for a while and if trad publishing didn't exist and I had to self-pub on Amazon I'd never even have started"

There were lots and lots and lots of these takes the last go-round we had of people going "FUCK publishing I hope they implode" with the Amazon v Hachette "price-fixing" fight, as I mentioned

Like I don't know how to explain to you that no one is actually SO stupid (while also being a completely selfish greedy asshole) that they just give away a ton of their money to a corporation for no reason

Authors get asked "You're smart and successful and have a fanbase, why don't you ditch the parasitic middleman and go indie" And almost universally the answer is "I looked into it and it would be a nightmare" or even "I actually did it and it was a nightmare"

Stross had this as its own section of his FAQ on his website, because he was so vocal about Amazon vs Hachette and so much of his readership were "Fuck the old dinosaur business model" techies who turned on him over it
