This is kind of a weird thing about me but when I first started reading fanfic, watching online videos, etc, I actually experienced serious mental distress over this Like if I read a story that just didn't make sense I would freak out and think there was something wrong with mehttps://twitter.com/iridienne/status/1271680158966005761 …

What about something like Final Fantasy VII where the original translation is so broken it actually kinda doesn't make sense?

For a while in the late 90s it seemed like everything coming out of Japan had to have a story that got really weird and fell apart at the end I blamed Evangelion

Evangelion falls apart on purpose, I think a lot of people just assumed they weren't smart enough to understand everything FFVII so it must be genius, but it was just a ton of mistranslated information.

It wasn't completely on purpose, they legit ran out of money in their budget because Anno overspent on previous episodes and Gainax wouldn't give them any more Like the still pictures of concept art are because they straight up couldn't pay their staff to animate the scene

Fair enough, but even with the limited budget he was always going in the direction of a trainwreck ending of some kind.

Oh yeah, the lack of financial discipline was absolutely connected to the overall lack of discipline and sense of everything unraveling that characterizes Anno's writing on the show
