Let me rephrase: "If you, as an author, are able to get your work trad-pubbed, you personally are almost certainly going to be better off going that route than self-pubbing the same work."

The vast majority of the people who are making any kind of a living from writing are still doing so through the trad-pub apparatus, and there are good reasons for that which are NOT copyright-related.

I don't believe that copyright was part of the discussion about funding models for artists.

Well I mean, yeah, self-publishers are in fact way way more dependent on copyright, all things considered, than trad publishers

Like, you don't have the advantage that it's easier to find your book on bookstore shelves or in a legit rec list on a legit website No one can find your book *at all*, except by chance

And the people who do stumble on your book's title by chance ("Arthur Chu said he read this book and really liked it! He has 40k followers!") are way, way more likely to do a quick Google and look to see if it's available for free to "check it out" After all, you're nobody

Again, I have real, physical books that are a story that was originally written on Reddit. It was free, but it wanted to support the author, and that was one way to do so.

You're an outlier, and the number of people who actually did so probably makes next to no difference to that author's finances Like when authors on that scale say your appreciation matters more than the money itself, they're right, the money bought them a few pizzas

And, again, the model meant the author for a pizza, and I got a book, and the author was more inclined to write more. How is that a bad model? That's what I'm not understanding.

No one actually knows what would have happened in some universe, especially since as a story on Reddit it may have existed because of a niche that only came together because of the Internet in the first place

But, broadly speaking, under the business model of an earlier generation, where actual publications were far more common and paying cash for them from newsstands was a common feature of everyday life, the author probably could've made way more A month's rent rather than a pizza

What if... and I know this is wild, but bear with me... the left offered a better deal for writers than capitalism currently does, and the push to reform came from outrage at working conditions and not just when you have to pay for things and don't wanna.
