There will never be a shortage of people who pay for books. The only people hurt by this are people that either wouldn't have bought the books, and people that couldn't. Classist moralising at it's worst.
And, contrariwise, the actual proposal to turn all compensation for creative labor into tipjars is literally making this industry more like waiting tables

I'm saying that artists, of any stripe, should be able to ask for a set amount of money before making their next piece of art If they don't get that money and they choose not to make the art then that's their choice.

Having got that money, however it is raised, then the art should exist. It's what we used to do with great artists in the past, with rich people paying a patronage, but now we can have lots of little paying a small amount of money. It's how YouTube creators do video essays.
