Like what warmed me to @davidclowery's takes on this issue was him pointing out just how absurdly common this rant is and it's ALWAYS from people who have no direct experience with it whatsoever

"Just self-publish! Advertise on social media! Set up a tip jar! Sell merch! It's SO EASY There's SO MUCH MONEY free for the taking on the Internet Why are you dumb losers insistent on shackling yourselves to outmoded dinosaurs"

It's so, so, so, so stupid Like if anyone talked like that about whatever your actual primary vocation is you would instantly recognize it as smarmy online rando bullshit

It's the exact same level as "Why waste money on groceries when you can start a garden and grow your own food" Like seriously shut the fuck up

Love to see people who seem to consider themselves hipster leftists say the same "Be your own boss, who needs the middleman" nonsense as libertarian douches who are into Bitcoin

It seems like everyone is (rightly) mad at people who offer to pay "with exposure", i.e., no money. But they really hate it when anyone suggests that some of the money should come out of their pockets when they consume things.
-
Like I get it, in an ideal moneyless society people would be free to create whatever they want just because they want to and give it to everyone. But just refusing to pay creators is not step one of creating that society.

Some leftists take this strange fork in the road They start with "existing systems of wages and compensation are exploitative" And instead of going down "so we need broad systemic change to empower workers," they decide on "so workers should work for free"
-
It's like they took "in a communist utopia everything will be free [because all needs will be provided for and workers will not be alienated from their labor]" and they went "great! So make everything free right now and we'll get to the rest later"
